Ashta Bhairavas and Ashta Matrikas
Pratishta

Who are Ashta Bhairavas?

The emergence of Ashta Bhairavas is attributed to Kala Bhairava. The other evidence suggests that Lord Shiva himself incarnated as the Ashta Bhairavas. In the Vamachara tradition, Matsyendranath and his followers are known to have revered the Ashta Bhairavas. Similarly, in the Dakshinachara tradition, these eight forms of Bhairava are venerated. References to the Ashta Bhairavas can also be found in sacred texts such as Sri Devi Khadgamala and in the Sarvasankshobhana Chakra of the Sri Chakra, particularly in its third enclosure.

Who are Ashta Matrikas?

The term "Matrika" signifies mother, representing the cosmic motherhood responsible for the functioning of the universe. Manifesting in eight forms, she oversees the cosmic operations. Shakti, the divine feminine energy, is the driving force behind all the actions. The Devi Bhagavatam provides accounts supporting this notion. During the battle against formidable demons like Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabija, Goddess Kali and Goddess Chandika called forth the Ashta Matrikas from Chandika herself. The Ashta Matrikas hold significance in various spiritual practices, including their reverence in the Prathama Avarana of the Sridevi Khadgamala Sotram and the Sri Chakram.
